So last year we switched our cats to Raw Instinct dry kibble, to later find out it's raw ingredients sprayed onto "kibble"..... so we're not sure what the actual raw content is. We've read that starch turns to sugar, and some diseases thrive on it. Around this time, we suddenly lost our 12-year old cat to cancer. Losing her kicked in our search for a better diet into high gear.
We started feeding Venus frozen raw food from the local feed store. Not all feed stores carry frozen raw, and one only had raw food for dogs. Dog foods simply are not formulated for cats' physiology--please don't even consider substitution. Anyway, Venus loves it! (A note of caution here... please introduce new foods to your cat slowly. Their tummies are delicate and cleaning vomit off the carpet isn't fun. We suddenly switched to frozen rabbit when the store had run out of poultry. Yikes.)
HOWEVER, she also needed a raw food that could be left out and eaten anytime to eat at her leisure. She liked Stella & Chewey's dry morsels but when it came time to reorder, I read a comment that Stella now has a chemical preservative. Now, Venus has a tumor for several years that was removed twice, but grew back bigger than ever. We want to keep her diet as pure as possible--her water is filtered, same as ours. The thing is, our old bag of Stella's didn't have the chemical listed, and if you click on the ingredient list on-line, it's not certain the *picture* of the ingredient panel hasn't been revised. So we tried Northwest Naturals after I called the company with some questions and got right through.
So we've found the perfect combination of moist and dry food for her. Venus loves her raw, moist breakfast and dinner with a pinch of crumbled, dry greens for cats (from our local herb store) mixed in, and Northwest Naturals (she's tried the turkey flavor so far) to nibble on whenever. Since the better part of a year her diet has been nearly 100% raw with a bit of sardine or wild salmon now and then.
BUT THE MOST AMAZING PART, is Venus is ten and a half years old and plays almost like a teenager again! She bats Mousie around, carries her in her mouth and tosses her in the air, talks to her, and climbs and exercises on her cat tree. HER FUR STILL CONTINUES GROWING IN SOFTER AND RICHER! She's more loving, more tolerant of being picked up than ever before. She was 13 pounds and has slowly lost a bit of weight with no deprivation. Her changes are so gratifying!
The only improvement to suggest to Northwest Naturals, and there's a comment somewhere else about this: The food resembles pellet type balls, packed in their large zip-lock style bag, so there's really no protection to keep the morsels from crumbling. Venus only eats them if they're whole, which leaves crumbs to mix in with her frozen food to avoid waste. We'd give a solid five stars if it sold in an airtight cardboard gizmo, so would take off half a star if possible (pssst... how about it, Northwest? :)
Incidentally, we have started using Pet Therapy brand herbal supplement called "Survival" to hopefully shrink her tumor. It's only been two weeks so far, 1/4 teaspoon daily, but it hasn't grown bigger and seems to have lost a bit of its vigor but it's too early to tell. Samples of the tumor came up as inconclusive for cancer. Because of our experience with our other cat's surgery--and since Venus just glows with good health--we decided not to pursue that route.
Incidentally, "Live with Your Pet in Mind" by Dr. Jodie, is a compelling book, with excellent information on raw food diets, how to decipher pet food labels, and more. You can just tell she loves animals. Dr. Jodie is Venus' veterinarian by the way, and we don't receive any compensation whatsoever for including these comments in this post (unless you count satisfaction at being able to share a book that will help your pets :)
We really are what we eat.
